The Temple of Hathor at Dendera preserves the only complete zodiac ceiling in Egypt, carved during the reign of Cleopatra VII and later removed to the Louvre in 1821—a plaster cast now occupies the original space above the chapel roof. Construction began under Ptolemy XII Auletes in 54 BCE and continued through successive Roman emperors, layering Greco-Roman architectural conventions onto pharaonic temple design. Roman emperors Tiberius, Caligula, and Nero added their cartouches to the outer walls, legitimising their rule through association with Egypt's divine order. The temple complex extends beyond the main sanctuary to include a mammisi (birth house) built by Augustus, a sacred lake for ritual purification, and a sanatorium where priests practised dream interpretation and divine healing. Reliefs on the exterior southern wall depict Cleopatra VII and her son Caesarion making offerings to the gods—among the last royal inscriptions carved before Rome's annexation of Egypt in 30 BCE. The rooftop chapels, accessed via internal staircases, hosted New Year ceremonies where priests carried Hathor's statue to the open-air kiosk to be regenerated by the sun's rays. Vibrant pigments—ochre, lapis lazuli, malachite—survive in protected chambers, revealing the temple's original polychrome splendour.
